Avoid sewer pollution costs

How does sewer pollution cost you money?

Cleaning up spills

Every time there is a sewage spill, the Local Authority fixes it.  Most of these spillages are caused by Household Sewer Pollution.  Householders create the pollution by putting the wrong things down the drains, particularly FOG.

Cleaning up the sewage

Every day the Treatment Plant does a lot of work to remove the FOG and Sewer Litter from the sewage that arrives there.

Cleaning the sewerage system

The Local Authority must frequently clean out the "fat traps" in the sewerage system leading to the Treatment Plant.  These are chambers that keep the FOG behind and let the rest of the sewage carry on.  The FOG has to be dug out and carted to the landfill.

Frequently, the Local Authority workers take sewage pumps apart to remove the buildup of FOG.  If they don't do this then they choke up, stop working, and the sewage stops flowing, spilling out somewhere.

In each case you pay more in your rates for fixing something which you can prevent.  If no-one put the Household Sewer Pollution into their drains, there would be no such costs.

How do you avoid polluting the waterways? -- Don't put the wrong things into the sewers or the stormwater drains.
